God's Awesome Plan

Hebrews
8:1-13

GOD'S AWESOME PLAN

God has an awesome plan.

1. His seat (vs 1)

God 's plan includes a brand new seat.

His place - It is at the right hand of the Majesty in Heaven. Jesus is seated as there is nothing more that he has to do for our salvation. There was no seat in the Holiest of Holies for the High Priest. The High Priest was continually offering sacrifices. There is nothing else that Jesus needs to do. The work of salvation is finished. You can't add anything to God's salvation. The seat is at the right hand of God. It is the place of acquittals. Jesus acquits us of sins. When you get into trouble Jesus will stand.
His provision - He is still on the throne. It seems at times that Satan is ruling in this world. God is still in control. He is a God who cares and provides.

2. His Service (vs 2-5)

This is what the Lord is doing. He is seated down but he is serving

The true tabernacle - It is not like the tabernacle in the Old Testament which was a shadow of the real one in Heaven. A shadow is a representation of something that is real. You need to have something real to have a shadow.
The typical tabernacle (vs 3-5) - The temple in the Old Testament was a picture of everything that goes around the throne of God.

3. His Solution (vs 6-13)

We need a new covenant that is better than the old one.

Better Mediator - A mediator is a go between. God is going to provide a mediator as part of his solution. Jesus stands between us and God when we pray. We have a mediator who arranges our prayers and presents them to God the Father.
Better Covenant - The word covenant means "to cut". The Bible is an agreement between God and man. When an agreement was made, an animal was cut and the two parties walked between the pieces to agree the deal. We have a new covenant. The first covenant is a "broken covenant" (vs 7). We wouldn't need a new covenant if the first one had been sufficient. The first covenant is based on law. See Exodus 19:5-8. The problem with the covenant was that the people were not able to obey it. The law can control you but it cannot change you. It can condemn you. It will convict you. The Law will show you are wrong and make you feel bad about it. But that was as far as the Law could go. It could never convert you. The Law is like a mirror. It shows me what needs to be done. It can do nothing to correct it. The problem was that the people could not keep the Law and God got sick of it! It was a broken covenant.

God has a new and better covenant. In this covenant Jesus is going to do the saving. God will get the job done! It is an awesome new plan! This covenant will not be written on stone, it will be written on your heart. The old covenant could control a person but not change a person. The new covenant will change you on the inside. You will want to do what is right, even if you don't always do what is right. Our sins and iniquities will be remembered no more. God has an awesome plan.
