A type is a picture in the Old Testament that is expanded in the New Testament. An example of this is the lamb that was sacrificed in the Old Testament. In the New Testament, Jesus is the lamb of God. There are many types or pictures in the Bible. Melchizadek is an Old Testament type of the Lord Jesus Christ. 1. His Titles (vs 1-3)See Genesis 14:14-22. Melchizedek met with Abram on his way back from defeating four kings.
2. His Tithes (vs 4-10)It was Abraham who commenced the tithing. It was put into law by Moses - you had no choice. Malachi came along and commanded it. In the New Testamert Jesus commended it. Matthew 23:23. The Apostle Paul continues it. See 1 Corinthians 16:1-2. You should not tithe because of the Law. You do not pay your tithe. It is not a bill. You give it. If you love Jesus you will give to Him. A husband loves his wife and gives voluntarily gives to her. 3. His Triumph (vs 11)He is a picture of the Lord Jesus Christ
4. His Triumph (vs 12-28)He is a picture of the Lord Jesus Christ. God never intended for the Levitical priesthood to be forever. It was necessary for a High Priest to come of the order of Melchizedek. Jesus Christ is a High Priest of a totally different kind. He is not just a man. He is unique. He arose all by himself. He has no ancestry that can be traced. Jesus had the power to arise from the dead all by himself. It is because of what Jesus has done that the Christian has total access to God. There is no need for a priest or sacrifices. See Hebrews 10:19-22. The Levitical priest was limited by their life span. We are not told of the beginning and the end of Melchizedek. This is like Jesus Christ. He is a priest who does not die. He ever lives to intercede. Jesus has the power to save. He is able. The Old Testament priest could not save anyone. It is one thing to be willing. It is another thing to be able. He is able to save to the uttermost. You are not half-way saved or lost. It is complete and permanent. You were far away but not you are close. He also has the power to sustain. (vs 25). It is the perpetual intercession of Christ that keeps us saved. He always makes intercession for us. He puts it on his account! See also Romans 8:34. We have a defense lawyer. He takes up our case. The Devil is our prosecutor. We are acquitted of our sins. The Devil accuses us before God. The Judge is our Heavenly Father and our defence lawyer is Jesus. The Devil puts his evidence on the table and Jesus shows his evidence. He died for all our sins on the cross and arose victorious from the grave. God the Father can say "Case closed!" |
