Give Me This Mountain

Joshua
14:6-15

GIVE ME THIS MOUNTAIN

Some Christians are living below what God has intended. We are to live on the mountain that God has given us. The Promised Land illustrates the victorious Christian life. You are set free from slavery. You are in a place of rest and refreshment. It was a place of reality. It was more than just a promise of better things.

1. Caleb's character (vs 8, 9, 15)

Caleb was an unusual man. He gave all of himself to the Lord. God deserves everything we have got. Half-hearted religion will not do. God used DL Moody to shake two continents. God is not impressed with your church attendance. Caleb was sold-out to God.

2. Caleb's confidence (vs 6, 10)

This followed on from Caleb's character. He had confidence in the Word of God. Look for references to what God had said. Caleb had a mountain to conquer. He had the title deed in his pocket as he went up the mountain with a sword.

Do you have confidence in God's promises. Caleb had a pure heart and the Word of God could grow in his heart.

3. Caleb's courage (vs 7-8, 12)

This followed on from Caleb's confidence. You will never have courage until you have a pure heart and God's confidence in your heart.

This was a rich land and there was great opposition. If you are lazy and looking for an easy life then you won't achieve this mountain. Caleb had overcome:-

"Grasshoppers" - He remembers 45 years ago when he first spied out the land. See Numbers 13:33. Too many people have a "grasshopper complex". You think there are too many giants in the land and you can't live that way. There are plenty of grasshoppers. Caleb did not follow the majority.
"Giants - There was giants in the land. Caleb was bothered by giants. He was excited by the challenge! He knew that God was bigger! Caleb saw them as bread to be eaten. We don't want to fight giants. We need to fight the giants if we are going to grow and get strong. There is opportunity in every difficulty. Look at giants from God's viewpoint!
"Grey hairs" - He was 85 years old. He was as strong as he was 45 years ago. God gives you the strength to meet his promises.

4. Caleb's conquest

Hebron means "fellowship" and was noted for it's fruitfulness. Caleb had to get rid of three giants. See Joshua 15:14. There is a way to live a victorious life. Caleb possessed his possessions. He had fellowship with God and produced spiritual fruit. We need to get out of the boat and trust in God. We need to be mountain climbers and go for God. The mountain belongs to me because God has promised it. Now go and possess it.
