1 Corinthians - A Series Of Sermons
| 1 Corinthians |
Paul was in the city of Ephesus when he received a letter from the church of Corinth. They were describing to him the awful
difficulties that they were finding, facing the world and all the flesh and the devil that they had to grapple
with in their own hometown. The book of 1 Corinthians is Paul the
apostle's reply to that letter he received from the church of Corinth when he was residing in Ephesus.

A Church Divided
| 1 Corinthians 1:10-17 |
The local church can have splits and divisions. It can be over silly things rather than doctrinal reasons. The church needs to be united over doctrinal reasons and not split over people and egos.
The church goes to war over things that are not important. The gospel is not preached as a result.

Behaviours That Bind Us
| 1 Corinthians 13:11-12 | We need to grow beyond childlikeness. We need to grow from children into adults. From childish things to mature things. | 2006-09-10 |

Christian Marriage
| 1 Corinthians 7:1-24 |
It is important to remember that this is a reply to a question, rather than all the
Bible has to say about marriage. We all look at this from our own perspective. There are those who are married,
divorced or single. Paul has advice for all.

Error In The Church
| 1 Corinthians 11:19 | There has always been heresies within the Church. In fact, they are not just chance historical phenomena but rather something that has always been bound with the nature
of the visible Church itself. Error can be surrounded by a great deal of truth. | 2006-09-10 |

Flee Immorality
| 1 Corinthians 5:1-13 |
One of the growing problems the church is facing today is what to do about the frightening increase in sexual
immorality among Christians. I do not think a week goes by but we hear reports of churches struggling in this area.
We hear of Christian leaders who have forsaken their wives, run off with the secretary, fallen into homosexuality,
or are facing some kind of a moral crisis in their churches. Many are properly concerned about this,
and wondering why this should be and what to do about it.

Fools For Christ
| 1 Corinthians 3 - 4 |
The church at Corinth was spiritually weak. They had not grown up spiritually. They were carnal. Their lives did not honour Christ. They gave lip service but did not study God's Word and teach it to others.
We need to take responsibility for our growth. God wants to deal with us personally. Do we read the Bible through? It take commitment. The enemy diverts us from studying. Those who have been around for years as Christians are still on baby food. They are still drinking milk instead of chewing on meat. The Church had grown in numbers but not very many as individuals.

Free To Do What?
| 1 Corinthians 8:1-13 |
The body is one of the central illustrations of the Church in the body. The Church is joined together and we experience pain
together. What one of us does has an impact on others in the body. The Church is not to be a collection of individuals.
What we say and do has an impact on others. We have freedom but not to live however we like.

between what you let yourself away with and others. Corinth was full of gaps. The biggest gap is freedom
about eating food offered to idols.

| 1 Corinthians 7:6-9; 25-41 | There used to be a time when people who reached their adult years in a single condition were looked down on, and considered inferior to others. However, that perception
has begun to change. Many are making a conscious decision to remain single. | 2006-09-17 |

Pennies For Heaven

Peronal Priorities
| 1 Corinthians 9:1-27 |
This chapter is a conversation about Christian freedom. This follows on from the last chapter. Food
that was sacrificed to idols had been dealt with. There will be areas of disagreement among Christians that come under
Christian freedom but are to be guided in the public exercising this freedom by the conscience of the other individual(s)
who may stumble. Paul uses his own life as an example.

Servants And Stewards
| 1 Corinthians 4:1-21 |
There was problems in the church at Corinth. The main problem was that a partisan spirit meant that people were splitting
into small groups driven by personalities. Men and women become elevated beyond what is right. The church is to work
together to follow Christ.

Singleness
| 1 Corinthians 7:17-40 |
Monks seclude themselves to deny the temptations and desires of this world. There are two extremist groups in
Corinth. Those who indulge in life and those who withdraw from it. Paul is concerned that people embrace life.
All situations belong to God.

Sometimes God Has To Live In Poor Lodgings
| 1 Corinthians 1:1-11 |
Corinth was sensual, idolatrous and yet it was the Church! It was a poor lodging house
for the Holy Spirit. God is not interested in the grandeur or luxury of a church building.
God is only interested in people.

Taming Temptation
| 1 Corinthians 10:12-14 | Temptation is not sin. It is what you do with the temptation that makes the difference. When temptation knocks on the door you don't have to let it in. You can conquer it. There is nothing new about temptation. When are you going to face it? | 2006-09-13 |

The Church At Worship
| 1 Corinthians 14:1-40 |
The Sacred Diary by Adrian Plass is a funny look at life in the local church. Life is like that sometimes. Your mind is somewhere else, someone annoys you, etc.
The Church at Corinth had its problems in their church meetings. There was disorder. Paul gives instructions on how to
do church with proper order The Spirit of God is to bring love, gifts and order. There are three things to govern
every meeting of the Church.

The Cross Divides Men
| 1 Corinthians 1:18 |
Now there are two classes of people who come to the cross of Christ. To one class of folk, the
cross of Christ is good for nothing — stupid. Another group of folk come to it and find in it the
atomic power of God unto salvation.

True And False Wisdom
| 1 Corinthians 1:18-2:16 |
What is the spirit of this present age? The world influences us more than we may think. There is an ongoing debate about what worldly wisdom.
In Corinth there was many public debates. It was very intellectual and religious. Wisdom was a big theme. The word sophistication comes from the word wise. The debates were not on atheism. It was on whether there was one or many gods for example. There was often a religious theme. The debates meant that some people became confused about what they believed.
We need to be firm in what we believe so that we do not lose our identity. Not all wisdom is true. Paul contrasts godly and worldly wisdom.
